Generally, the āsana (आसन) refers to body postures and is one of the three subdivisions of pratimalakshana (postures of icons), as defined in texts on shilpa (arts and crafts), known as shilpashastra.

The āsanas are classified into sthana or sthanaka (the standing poses), asana (the sitting poses), sayana (the reclining poses), sthanasana (the pose dependent on the sthānaka) and sayanasana (the pose dependent on the reclining pose).
